The Mercosul Biennial in Porto Alegre

On view until 20 November, the 13th Mercosul Biennial in Porto Alegre this year presents works by 99 artists in ten different venues across the capital of Rio Grande do Sul. Under the theme Trauma, sonho e fuga, the event features activations in urban spaces and group exhibitions in traditional venues as well as new locations around the city; the circuit includes Largo Moacyr Scliar, Travessa do Catavento, Fundação Iberê Camargo, Instituto Caldeira and the Museu de Arte do Rio Grande do Sul (MARGS).

"Almost all trauma survivors experience some kind of sleep problem, such as insomnia. But, for around half of three quarters of people, it is vivid dreams that hinder deep sleep and open the doors of consciousness to a path yet to be invented. Trauma is the greatest fuel of art of all time, and dreams are a stratagem for escape," explains the Biennial's promotional text. The event is curated by Marcello Dantas (coordinator), with Tarsila Riso, Laura Cattani, Munir Klamt and Carolina Lauriano (adjunct curators).

Participating works include pieces by artists such as Lygia Clark (featured photo), Marina Abramovic, Dora Smék, Gabriel de la Mora, Juliana Góngora Rojas, Leandro Lima and Marilá Dardot, among others. See the full programme on the event's website.
