For those in São Paulo, there are two unmissable exhibitions to put on the agenda:

At MAM: 37th Panorama of Brazilian Art

Under the theme "Sob as cinzas, brasa", the Museu de Arte Moderna de São Paulo (MAM) presents the 37th Panorama da Arte Brasileira, at its home in Ibirapuera Park, with works by 26 artists from various regions of the country, Giselle Beiguelman, Jaime Lauriano, Glauco Rodrigues and Bell Faleiros among them. The show, which runs until January 2023, has part of its works on display at the Museu Afro Brasil, also located in Ibirapuera.

The curatorship, shared by Claudinei Roberto da Silva, Vanessa Davidson, Cristiana Tejo and Cauê Alves, takes as its starting point two important anniversaries of the year 2022: the bicentennial of Independence and the centenary of the Semana de Arte Moderna. "The show sets out to deconstruct naturalised paradigms regarding colonial Brazil (…) and emphasises research that results in questionings and possible artistic solutions arising from confronting a scenario where barbarism is manifested in many forms", says the museum.

One of the works that has already caught the public's attention and appears in numerous images on social media is the series "Cupinzeiro", by Lídia Lisboa, a series of clay sculptures reminiscent of the termite mounds common in rural Brazil, occupying a large wing of the museum.

At MASP

And on Avenida Paulista, the exhibition Dalton Paula: Retratos Brasileiros opens on 26 August, with paintings the artist has been producing since 2018 portraying Black historical figures, men and women, who have been under-represented in Brazilian history. "With them, Dalton Paula confers dignity, visibility and recognition on these figures, a process that is expanded by the presence of these works in collections and by the exhibition itself".

Dalton Paula's solo show takes place in the context of the group exhibition Histórias Brasileiras, organised jointly by all of MASP's curators, which opens on 26 August.
