What to do with your collection during a renovation?

Architectural floor plans for a renovation on a desk, with a scale ruler, a mechanical pencil and a compass

Dust is already, by nature, one of the greatest enemies of works of art. Under normal conditions, cleaning and preventive conservation routines must be religiously observed so that particles suspended in the air do not remain deposited for long on canvases, sculptures or works in other media.

So what to say, then, about a renovation?

However small or well planned the intervention in a property may be, leaving a work at the mercy of the dust raised during the job is a terrible idea, not to mention the possibility of damage from materials and tools being moved around the space. In this post, we discuss what to do with a collection during a renovation.

Proper packing

The best course of action is to remove the pieces from the space, pack them in suitable packing (which rules out bubble wrap) and keep them stored in a room with controlled lighting and temperature.

When the renovation is large-scale, or when the collector does not have a room with good storage conditions, a private art storage facility can be hired for a fixed period.

Temporary storage for renovations

Several of our clients rent space temporarily precisely for situations of this kind. What they all have in common is the awareness that prevention is better than cure: an accident during a renovation, exposure to dust, or storage and transport carried out without the necessary care can cause irreversible damage to a work of art, a loss that is not only financial but above all cultural.

For situations like these, Clé Chenue do Brasil maintains a shared storage space, rented by square meter of occupancy. The warehouse is fully climate-controlled and has specialized surveillance and fire protection, with professionals on site 24 hours a day, including weekends. Only Clé Chenue employees have access to this space, which guarantees total confidentiality for the items in storage.

When needed, we provide guidance on proper packing and transport.
