Tarsila do Amaral receives retrospective exhibitions in Europe

The Musée du Luxembourg, in Paris, has just opened the exhibition Tarsila do Amaral: pintar o Brasil moderno, a retrospective of the Brazilian visual artist whose patron is the president of France, Emmanuel Macron. According to an assessment by Folha de S. Paulo, the artist is enjoying unprecedented popularity, not only in Brazil but around the world.

The exhibition is divided into six modules: Paris/São Paulo, passports to modernity; The invention of the Brazilian landscape; Primitivism and identity(ies); Cannibal Brazil; Working men and women; and New Landscapes, which include some of her most important works, such as Tarsila's self-portraits, "A caipirinha" (1923), "O touro" (1928) and "Urutu" (1928).

Around 150 works left Brazil for Europe, in a logistics operation carried out by Clé Chenue do Brasil. The canvases, drawings and documents were collected in the Southeast, Center-West and Northeast regions. Among the works is "Rio de Janeiro" (1923), lent to the exhibition by the Casa Museu Ema Klabin, in São Paulo.

For those curious to learn more details about the show, the exhibition guide is available for free download on the Museum's website, in Portuguese.
